- You're engaged to a British citizen or someone settled in the UK, and you want to marry here.
- You plan to form a civil partnership in the UK with your partner.
- You're already here on a fiancé(e) visa, the wedding is booked, and you need to switch to a spouse visa.
What's included
Step 1: Check you qualify
We look at your relationship, your wedding plans, your finances, your English, and your accommodation, and tell you if anything could cause a problem.
Step 2: Build your evidence
We give you a clear document checklist and review your evidence, including proof of your relationship and your plans to marry.
Step 3: Prepare the application
We complete the online form and write a cover letter explaining how you meet each requirement.
Step 4: Submit and keep you updated
We submit the application, explain what happens next, and keep you updated until the Home Office decides.
Step 5: After the wedding
We explain your eVisa and the rules you must follow, and help you plan your switch to a spouse or civil partner visa.
The main requirements
You and your partner must both be 18 or over, have met in person, and plan to live together permanently in the UK. Your partner must usually be a British citizen or settled in the UK.
Your relationship must be genuine, which means real. You'll need to show you plan to marry within six months, for example with evidence of your wedding plans.
You must meet the financial requirement (check the current figure on GOV.UK) and the English language requirement, unless you're exempt. You also need suitable accommodation that isn't overcrowded, without relying on public funds (most state benefits).
Your wedding in the UK
You apply from outside the UK, before you travel. Once you arrive, you'll need to give notice of your marriage or civil partnership at a register office. This can take time, so plan early.
If you plan an Islamic marriage (nikah), a religious ceremony alone may not be legally recognised in the UK. You may also need a civil ceremony.
Switching to a spouse visa
After the wedding, you apply from inside the UK to switch to a spouse or civil partner visa. You must apply before your fiancé(e) visa runs out. You'll need to show you still meet the requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What is a fiancé(e) visa?
It lets you come to the UK to marry, or form a civil partnership, within six months. After the wedding, you apply from inside the UK to switch to a spouse or civil partner visa.
Can I work on a fiancé(e) visa?
No. You can't work while you're on a fiancé(e) visa. You usually can once you've been granted a spouse or civil partner visa.
How much does my partner need to earn?
You need to meet the financial requirement. Check the current figure on GOV.UK, as it can change. Income, savings, and some other sources can count, and we'll tell you what counts for you.
What if our wedding is delayed?
Speak to us straight away. You must apply to switch to a spouse visa before your fiancé(e) visa runs out. In some cases you may be able to apply to stay longer if there's a good reason for the delay.
Does time on a fiancé(e) visa count towards settling in the UK?
No. Time towards settlement usually starts once you're granted a spouse or civil partner visa.
We only want to marry in the UK, then leave. Do I need this visa?
Probably not. If you don't plan to live here, a different visa may be right for you. We'll help you work out which one.
