  • You want someone you trust to be able to manage your money or decisions if illness or an accident ever stops you.
  • You're caring for a parent and want to plan ahead while they can still make the decision themselves.
  • You run a business or own property and want a plan in place if you can't act.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Talk it through

We explain the two types of LPA, help you choose your attorneys, and discuss any instructions or preferences.

  2. Step 2: We prepare the forms

A solicitor prepares your LPA and checks every section, so it isn't rejected for a technical error.

  3. Step 3: Sign in the right order

You, a certificate provider, your attorneys, and witnesses sign in the order the rules require. We guide everyone through it.

  4. Step 4: Register with the Office of the Public Guardian

We submit the LPA for registration. It can only be used once it's registered.

Why plan ahead

Illness or an accident can happen at any age. An LPA means the person you choose, not a court, can step in to help with your money or your care if you can't decide for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What are the two types of LPA?

A property and financial affairs LPA covers things like bank accounts, bills, and selling a home. A health and welfare LPA covers decisions about medical treatment and care. Many people make both.

Can my family decide for me without an LPA?

Not automatically. Without an LPA, a family member may have to apply to the Court of Protection to become a deputy, which is slower and more expensive.

When can I make an LPA?

While you have the mental capacity to understand what it means. That's why it's best to make one well before it's needed.

Who can be my attorney?

Anyone over 18 whom you trust, such as a family member or friend. You can appoint more than one and say how they should act together.

Do I still need a will?

Yes. An LPA only works while you're alive. Your will deals with what happens after you die.
