What it costs
Disputes vary too much for a fixed fee, so we charge by the hour. We start with a 60-minute solicitor consultation, credited against our fees if you instruct us, then give you a written estimate for each stage before it starts.

| Solicitor consultation (60 minutes)Credited against our fees if you instruct us. | £250+ VAT£300 incl. VAT | £300 |
Our fees are + VAT at 20%. They don't include court fees, which you pay directly to the court.
Court fees depend on the value of the claim and are paid to the court. Barristers' fees, expert reports, and other third-party costs are extra if your case needs them. We'll agree them with you before they're incurred.
Typical timescale. Many disputes settle within a few months. If a claim goes to court, it can take a year or more to reach a final hearing, depending on the court's timetable. Strict time limits apply to most claims, so get advice early.

- Someone has broken an agreement with you, or you're being accused of breaking one.
- You're in a dispute over property, money, or a business deal and the other side won't settle.
- You've received a letter before claim or court papers and need to respond by a deadline.
How it works
Step 1: Check where you stand
We look at the facts and documents, explain the strengths and weaknesses of your position, and tell you about any deadlines and the likely costs.
Step 2: Try to resolve it
We write to the other side, following the court's pre-action rules, and negotiate for you. Many disputes settle at this stage, or through mediation.
Step 3: Issue or defend a claim
If it doesn't settle, we issue a claim at court for you, or prepare your defence if a claim has been made against you.
Step 4: Prepare the case
We exchange documents and witness statements with the other side, and comply with the court's timetable. Settlement is still possible at any point.
Step 5: Hearing
If the case goes to a final hearing, we prepare it fully and instruct a barrister to present it where needed. A judge then decides.
Disputes we help with
We act for individuals and small businesses in civil disputes, including breaches of contract, disputes over property and land, disagreements between business partners or with suppliers and customers, and claims about wills and estates.
Keeping costs in proportion
Litigation can be expensive, so we'll always tell you whether a claim is worth bringing, what it's likely to cost at each stage, and whether there's a cheaper way to resolve it, such as mediation.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to go to court?
Not always. The courts expect both sides to try to settle first, and most disputes are resolved through negotiation or mediation without a hearing.
Who pays the legal costs?
In most civil cases, the losing side is ordered to pay a large part of the winner's legal costs, but not all of them. The rules are different for small claims. We'll explain the costs risks before you decide how to proceed.
How long do I have to bring a claim?
For most contract claims, the limit is 6 years from the breach. Other claims have different, sometimes shorter, limits. Don't wait: get advice as soon as you can.
I've received a letter before claim. What should I do?
Take it seriously and get advice quickly. You'll usually be given a set time to reply, and how you respond can affect what happens next, including who pays the costs.
Can you help with a dispute about a will or an estate?
Yes. See our inheritance disputes service for claims about wills, estates, and executors.
